NEW YORK, NY - Chiquita Brands International, Inc. (NYSE: CQB) earned the first-ever CERES-ACCA Award for Outstanding Sustainability Reporting for its 2001 Corporate Responsibility Report. The Coalition of Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) presented the award earlier today during the CERES 2003 Advancing Sustainable Governance Conference.

"The judges felt Chiquita's report was a pioneering and open report, honestly discussing the relevant, if difficult, issues for your sector and company," said Mindy S. Lubber, executive director of CERES. "The report states your company's goals and current performance very clearly, demonstrating that these issues are being seriously addressed."

"We're very proud to receive this recognition for our transparency in addressing issues of environmental, social and financial performance," said Jeff Zalla, Chiquita's corporate responsibility officer. "Reporting is an essential part of our efforts to continually achieve high standards of corporate responsibility, which have become a source of tremendous pride for our employees and an essential part of our culture and business strategy."

Chiquita's corporate responsibility reports for 2001 and 2000 are available from the company's web site at www.chiquita.com.

The purpose of the CERES-ACCA awards program is to contribute to reporting on sustainability, environmental and social issues by corporations and other organizations across the United States, reward best practice, provide guidance to other entities that are publishing or intend to publish sustainability reports and increase accountability to stakeholders.

Since its founding in 1989, CERES has persuaded dozens of companies to endorse the CERES Principles and cofounded the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). For more information, visit www.ceres.org.
