Donation of eight Mercedes-Benz 800 trucks
Help for flood victims increased to DM 600,000

Only a few days after the African Business Forum 2000 in Berlin, DaimlerChrysler is increasing the aid the company has designated for Mozambique. At the forum, Chairman Jürgen E. Schrempp told Mozambique's president, Joaquim Chissano, that the company intended to further help.

Schrempp, who is also the chairman of the Southern Africa Initiative of German Business (SAFRI), was instrumental in organizing the business forum, which was the largest Southern Africa investment conference ever held outside of the continent, and was attended by approximately 700 participants from Germany and Africa.

As part of the help being offered by DaimlerChrysler, eight Mercedes-Benz type 800 trucks with closed bodies will be sent to the Mozambique capital of Maputo. The vehicles are especially suited for use under difficult conditions and will be of long-lasting help to the flood victims. This latest contribution increases the total amount DaimlerChrysler has donated to the flood-stricken African country to more than DM 600,000.

The Caritas Mocambicana, a Catholic relief organization, will receive six of the vehicles, while the other two will go to the Relief Corps of the Order of Malta in Mozambique. The trucks will be presented to the organizations by Claus Körte, DaimlerChrysler Regional Office Southern Africa, and Karl-Heinz Schlaiss, the head of the DaimlerChrysler representative office in Pretoria. The vehicles will be serviced by the Mercedes-Benz general agency for Mozambique, Entreposto.
