GARDEN CITY, N.Y. & ISLANDIA, N.Y. - Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) and the Long Island Children's Museum (LICM) today marked the end of the third year of KICKStart, a groundbreaking community initiative designed to address critical social and educational needs in four traditionally underserved Long Island communities.

Since KICKStart was launched in 2002 with a $5 million CA grant to the LICM, the program has enhanced education, strengthened community relations and resulted in more than 20,000 museum visits. KICKStart serves pre-school, second, and third grade students and families from Central Islip, Hempstead, Roosevelt and Wyandanch. In 2003-2004, the program was expanded to include third graders.

KICKStart goals are to:

  • Increase access to, and awareness of, museums and other informal learning institutions for families who are traditionally underserved by cultural institutions;

  • Increase parental involvement in children's learning; and

  • Increase exposure to hands-on, inquiry-based, exploratory activities for children in underserved populations.

    "CA and LICM launched this endeavor three years ago to address the educational and social needs of these four communities," said Anne Marie Agnelli, director of community relations and public affairs at CA. "We are proud of the many achievements in education and in the community that have resulted from the partnership between CA and LICM. The program stands as an innovative and sustainable model of public and private collaboration."

    As part of KICKStart, students receive multiple visits to the Museum during the school year, membership cards to LICM, t-shirts, transportation and community night parties. To celebrate the end of the school year, and the third year of KICKStart, LICM is hosting four Community Nights in June for students and their families.

    "Through CA's visionary support, LICM is able to provide students and their families with greater access to the museum," said LICM President Robert S. Lemle. "By working together, we are bringing young people to LICM and bringing LICM into their classrooms. We are exposing increasing numbers of children to new opportunities and experiences and in doing so are broadening their horizons. KICKStart is a landmark nonprofit-corporate partnership. Together, we are changing lives."
