Houston,- Cooper Industries, Ltd. (NYSE: CBE) today announced the winners of its annual Environmental Excellence Awards program. Taking top honors in this year's competition was the Cooper Crouse-Hinds operation in Syracuse, NY.

Cooper Crouse-Hinds dramatically reduced the energy used at the plant by more than 1,000,000 kilowatt hours, 70,000 gallons of heating oil and 6 million cubic feet of natural gas. In addition, associated air emissions also were significantly reduced. The plant also eliminated the use of 16 million gallons of water previously required for steam heating and other purposes.

"Cooper supports environmental excellence in our operations, and this program helps recognize those Cooper facilities that take the lead in achieving this goal," said Kirk Hachigian, president and chief executive officer, Cooper Industries. "At the same time, this program allows us to support the environmental efforts of organizations in our plant communities.

In short, our commitment to protecting the environment is good for our employees, our customers and for the communities in which Cooper operates."

Cooper's Environmental Excellence Awards are presented to the Company's facilities that achieve more efficient use of resources, waste reduction and more cost-effective ways to maintain compliance and reduce risk. Winners in the program make grants funded by Cooper to community nonprofit organizations that improve and protect the local environment. Since 1995, Cooper has presented more than $400,000 in environmental grants to recipient organizations in more than 50 cities around the world.
