COLUMBUS, IN - Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has been named the top U.S. corporate citizen by Business Ethics magazine, the Company and the magazine announced today. Cummins was chosen from among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies for the award, which recognizes commitment to total corporate social responsibility.

Business Ethics magazine analyzes companies on the Russell 1000 Index to assess their performance across eight categories - total return to shareholders, employees, diversity, governance, environment, human rights, products and community involvement - to arrive at its list of the top 100 corporate citizens. Now in its sixth year, the "100 Best" list has become a closely-watched indicator of best practices in Corporate America.

Cummins is one of only 19 companies to have been named to the list every year since its inception. The Company's previous best ranking in the survey was No. 2 in 2003.

"We're honored to be at the top of a list that includes some of the leading companies in the United States," said Cummins Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tim Solso. "Making people's lives better through our products and the contributions of our people is Cummins mission, and we have 28,000 employees around the world working very hard to live that mission every day."

"There is always more work to be done to as we strive for continuous improvement in serving all of our stakeholders, but being named the top corporate citizen by Business Ethics is a wonderful recognition of our employees' efforts, and one of which we are very proud."

To arrive at its list, Business Ethics enlists the help of KLD Research and Analytics in Boston to provide the social reporting data for the list. All companies are scored in each of the eight categories and the individual scores are then standardized to give equal weight to each category. The scores are then averaged to arrive at the final ranking.

In its story on the best corporate citizens, the magazine cited Cummins significantly improved financial performance, its commitment to emissions-reduction and its corporate social responsibility efforts around the world.

Cummins received the highest possible score for its community involvement efforts and improved upon last year's scores in all categories in which comparisons could be made. For example, Cummins was in the top third on return to shareholders among this year's top 100 corporate citizens, after finishing near the bottom in that measure on the 2004 list. Cummins was No. 27 on the 2004 "100 Best" list.

"Business Ethics magazine conducts this annual survey because we believe the information is important to analysts, investors, consumers and the public," said Michael Connor, Publisher and Executive Editor of the magazine. "Business ethics and corporate social responsibility are increasingly important factors in measuring corporate performance, and there is a surge in demand for information and perspective on these issues."
