GOODLETTSVILLE, TN - Dollar General Corporation (NYSE: DG) today announced a $300,000 pledge to help tsunami victims in South Asia recover from one of the biggest natural disasters in modern history.

Dollar General pledged the funds to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund), which is appealing for aid on behalf of the tsunami's youngest victims. UNICEF estimates that 1.5 million children have been affected in South Asia, many of which have been orphaned or separated from their families and are in critical need of basic care and support.

"This disaster's toll on human life has touched and moved many people in our company," said David Perdue, Dollar General CEO. "As global citizens, we feel compelled to help these children."

The company is also encouraging its employees and others to make donations to the relief effort. A special link from Dollar General's Web site has been created for this purpose.

"We are grateful that Dollar General has stepped up and responded to our appeal for aid," said Charles J. Lyons, president of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. "Dollar General's donation will help UNICEF increase children's chances of survival throughout South Asia."

In helping young victims, UNICEF is focusing on making accessible clean water, adequate sanitation, basic nutrition, and routine medical care. In addition, UNICEF is making priorities of uniting displaced children with their families, protecting them from exploitation, and training teachers and counselors to address the effects of trauma on youth.
