Carlos GuimaraesMIDLAND, MI - Carlos Guimaraes, vice president of the Environmental Operations Business, The Dow Chemical Company, has been named a 2003 award recipient by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corporation (HENAAC) and Technica™ Magazine. Guimaraes will receive the Albert V. Baez Award, which was established in 1995 to honor engineers and scientists with outstanding technical achievements and service to humanity.

According to William S. Stavropoulos, Dow chairman, president and chief executive officer, "Carlos' visionary leadership has played a major role in shaping the strategies and plans that have enabled Dow to become recognized as an industry leader in environmental stewardship." He noted that Dow operates according to high standards of sustainable development - the simultaneous pursuit of economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. "Through the creation of a unique business model, as well as the ability to lead and develop innovative approaches, Carlos has directed the investment of nearly one billion dollars at Dow sites around the world to conserve natural resources such as water, while reducing waste, wastewater and air emissions. He has turned operations on the brink of closure into competitive sites that continue to flourish today."

Guimaraes' nomination was initiated by Dow's Hispanic Latin Network, an employee organization that is focused on strengthening the diversity of cultures, experiences and professional skills within Dow's Hispanic-Latin community in order to enhance business success and career development.

Guimaraes will receive the award October 17 at a ceremony sponsored by HENAAC, the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, and leading industry and government sponsors.

Guimaraes, who is based in Houston, Texas, is a 28-year employee of Dow. He has served in a variety of operational, business and leadership roles throughout Europe, North America and Latin America. These have included roles as production leader, plant superintendent, site manager, global business director, president of Dow Mexico, and president of Dow Portugal. He was appointed to his current role as vice president of the Environmental Operations Business and vice president of Operations for the Chemicals Business Group in 2000. Guimaraes also serves as chairman of the United States Business Council for Sustainable Development, a partner organization of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
