Immediately after the disaster, ExxonMobil worked with Pos Keadilan Peduli Umat (PKPU) to assist emergency relief efforts such as providing medical treatment and supplies, basic foods, and tents to more than 1,000 people in Pundong, Mirisewu and Kalisono, Central Java. ExxonMobil contributed $100,000 through BPMIGAS (Indonesia's Oil and Gas Regulatory Body for Upstream Business), along with other oil and gas companies in Indonesia. ExxonMobil's employees in Indonesia also have been collecting and donating funds to be given through several local NGOs.
"ExxonMobil is saddened by this terrible tragedy," said Peter Coleman, president and general manager of ExxonMobil in Indonesia. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who died in this horrific event and with the survivors as they attempt to put their lives back in order."
ExxonMobil is a major investor in Central Java through its affiliates, Mobil Cepu Ltd. (MCL) and Ampolex (Cepu) Pte. Ltd, as the contractor of BPMIGAS for the Cepu Block. In March 2006, ExxonMobil signed a Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) with PT Pertamina EP Cepu that allows the companies to proceed with the development stage of the Cepu Block.
