It began in 1997 with a
cooperative mentoring program known as "The 5% Solution." Today, the
"solutions" provided through Federal-Mogul Corporation's (NYSE: FMO) support
of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit have enjoyed exponential
growth.
In September 1997, Federal-Mogul Chairman, Chief Executive Officer Dick
Snell unveiled a plan to enroll 5 percent of the company's World Headquarters
staff as Big Brothers or Big Sisters to local children in need. The company
immediately upped the ante by committing an additional 5 percent of its
Southfield employees to become "mentors for a day" with Little Brothers or
Little Sisters who had yet to be matched with adults.
The company's commitment to Big Brothers Big Sisters grew out of the
dedication of Snell and his wife, Sheridan, to making Federal-Mogul a leading
advocate of community causes. The Snells came to the area from Chicago in
1996 when Dick Snell was elected chairman, chief executive officer and
president of the company. Dick Snell is a national board member of Big
Brothers Big Sisters of America; Sheridan Snell serves on the board of the
Metropolitan Detroit chapter.
"A company of our size can generate a great deal of momentum on behalf of
important local issues," Snell said. "In my mind, there are few issues more
important than the future of our community's children. Mentoring programs
such as those provided through Big Brothers Big Sisters help bring an
overwhelmingly positive influence to the lives of children who might otherwise
assume they have little hope for success or happiness."
Since the launch of its corporate partnership plan, Federal-Mogul has
raised more than $1 million to support Big Brothers Big Sisters programs. In
addition, the company has sponsored clothing drives and organized a formal
"job shadowing" program to introduce at-risk children to the opportunities and
challenges of the business world.
"These activities have enriched the lives of our employees, as well,"
Snell said. "I'm very proud of the way our company has responded to the needs
of hundreds of young people and, by extension, to the needs of the Detroit
community."
"The Tennis Moguls," the newest component of the company's partnership
with Big Brothers Big Sisters, will provide tennis clinics and more than 1,400
hours of personal lessons to Detroit-area "littles." The mission of the
three-year program is to help the kids develop constructive, enjoyable skills
they can share with their family members, friends and mentors.
Headquartered in Southfield, Michigan, Federal-Mogul is an automotive
parts manufacturer providing innovative solutions and systems to global
customers in the automotive, small engine, heavy-duty and industrial markets.
