Johnson Controls named to Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

MILWAUKEE, WI. - September 17, 2008 - Johnson Controls has again been selected to the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) North America and World categories for 2008. Among the world’s leading corporate social responsibility indices, the DJSI are the first to track the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. This is the fourth consecutive year Johnson Controls has been placed on both the DJSI World and DJSI North America Indexes.

DJSI members must meet rigorous economic, environmental, and social performance criteria including corporate governance, environmental policy and management, environmental and social reporting, stakeholder engagement, corporate citizenship and philanthropy.

"Our placement in the DJSI World and North America indexes reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic performance."

DJSI World includes the top 10 percent of companies ranked by sustainability performance in each DJSI sector. Only 320 companies out of the 2,500 largest in the world are included in this year’s index.

DJSI North America includes the top 20 percent of companies in terms of sustainability performance for each DJSI sector. There are 125 out of 600 companies included in the North American index this year.

Johnson Controls has been ranked on the DJSI World and North American indexes for the past four years, reflecting the company's continuous efforts to create smart environments through ingenious solutions for the places people live, work and travel. Some examples of how the company has succeeded include:

  • Johnson Controls participated in industry efforts to make lead-acid automotive batteries the most recycled consumer product in the United States.
  • The company is a leading supplier of hybrid battery systems and will supply lithium-ion batteries to Mercedes-Benz for its new S class hybrid sedan, scheduled to roll out in 2009.
  • Johnson Controls is one of only 13 companies with membership in the supplier diversity Billion Dollar Roundtable for spending more than $1 billion annually with women- and minority-owned businesses.
