CLEVELAND - Yank Heisler, CEO, McDonald Financial Group; and executive vice president of KeyCorp, accepted the Rotary Club of Cleveland's first-ever Corporate 4-Way Test Award last week in honor of KeyBank's high ethical standards in business. The award recognizes Key's extraordinary efforts to educate employees about telling the truth and supporting company actions; improving banking access for small and medium-sized businesses by listening to their needs; and treating employees ethically during dramatic business environment changes.

Written by Herbert J. Taylor in 1932 after he took charge of a company during the midst of the Depression, the 4-Way Test requires companies adhere to principles expressed in four fundamental questions: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? The test is credited with pulling the company out of bankruptcy and with revolutionizing personnel, advertising and sales policies.

Rotary International adopted the test in the 1940's and made it a vital part of the organization's Vocational Service Programs. Living up to the example of ethical management set forth by Rotary International, the 4-Way Test today is translated into the language of more than 166 countries. The test sits on the desks of countless business and professional leaders and is hung on the walls of schools, libraries, factories and business offices.

October is Vocational Service Month - Rotary's second Avenue of Service - which David M. Browning, president of the Rotary Club of Cleveland and managing director, CB Richard Ellis, says calls for Rotarians to apply high ethical standards to their businesses or professions and to view their occupations as an opportunity to serve society.

"It's incredibly important to recognize and honor those companies that maintain high ethical standards in business, given the constant scrutiny corporate America in under today," says Browning. "The manner in which Key conducts business exemplifies commitment to the 4-Way Test. Key's customers, employees and shareholders, and the entire Northeastern Ohio community, benefit."
