ROOTSTOWN, Ohio - Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) today received a major lift from a $100,000 gift by KeyBank to the NEOUCOM Foundation to strengthen the College's continuing professional education (CPE) program.

NEOUCOM offers 15 to 20 programs annually attended by nearly 2,000 physicians and partners with Northeast Ohio hospitals to sponsor continuing education programs for an additional 3,000 physicians, residents and other health care providers. Continuing medical education is required of all practicing physicians who must complete 100 hours every two years to remain in practice.

"NEOUCOM's CPE programs have built a solid reputation in the medical community. They are valued by physicians and other health care providers for their educational effectiveness, their variety of topics and for their ease of accessibility and reasonable cost," says Lois Margaret Nora, M.D., J.D., NEOUCOM's president and dean. "Our relationship with KeyBank will allow the College to offer outstanding programs with regional and nationally known experts. Together, the College and KeyBank will bring quality CPE programs to northeast Ohio with the ultimate goal of improving patient care for Ohio citizens."

KeyBank and McDonald Financial Group, which together specialize in serving the financial needs of local physicians and their practices, attribute their expertise to a solid understanding of the medical profession and its businesses, and the profound impact world-class health care has on the economic well-being of people and communities.

"Education plays a critical role in keeping physicians up-to-date on the latest medical advancements and skills essential for sustaining their livelihoods," says Thomas E. Tulodzeiski, president of KeyBank's Eastern Ohio District. "NEOUCOM's dynamic educational programs help medical professionals and our communities continue to thrive. We're proud to be associated with the college's commitment to excellence."

"The Physician and Attorney Leadership Conference: What's in Your Professional Toolbox," was held Oct. 5 and was the first NEOUCOM program underwritten by KeyBank. This program was offered through the Institute for Community-Based Medicine and Law, a joint project of NEOUCOM and The University of Akron School of Law. The institute was created to study and report on significant issues in health care, including the medical malpractice insurance crisis. KeyBank also underwrote the annual OB/GYN Conference, held Oct. 19 in the Ralph Regula Conference Center on NEOUCOM's Rootstown, Ohio campus. KeyBank will be the major underwriter of two additional programs focusing on internal medicine in May 2006.

"NEOUCOM and KeyBank are two strong institutions committed to improving the communities they serve," Nora adds. "I am delighted that KeyBank recognizes the tremendous value of our CPE program and has committed itself to making a real difference in Ohio's health care."

Earlier this summer, NEOUCOM's Office of Continuing Professional Education was surveyed for reaccreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and awarded the prestigious accreditation with commendation as a provider of continuing medical education (CME) for physicians. Approximately 8 percent of CME providers nationwide are awarded accreditation with commendation. The accreditation is in effect for a six-year period.

"We are pleased to have national recognition of our CME program and thrilled to have KeyBank join us in our effort to make an excellent program even better," said Martha Silling, Ph.D., director of curriculum.

"KeyBank's support benefits not only NEOUCOM's CPE program, it also will help us further other educational offerings, such as our proposed doctor of pharmacy program," said R. Scott Evans, associate executive director of the NEOUCOM Foundation. "We are pleased that KeyBank recognizes the outstanding work being done in our communities by NEOUCOM faculty, staff, alumni and students through its efforts to help us meet our mission of education, research and service."
