KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY) ranks 13th among the most generous cash giving companies in America according to BusinessWeek's December 1st special report, "America's Top Givers," and first-ever ranking of America's most philanthropic companies.

Described by BusinessWeek as "a snapshot of the biggest players in corporate philanthropy," the list ranks 15 companies based on "gifts as a percentage of revenues," citing Key with gifts totaling $17 million, 0.277% of its 2002 revenues.

Other companies listed include Computer Associates, Corning, Eli Lilly, Fifth Third Bancorp, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, General Mills, Guidant, Intel, Janus Capital Group, Medtronic, Nike, Northern Trust, T. Rowe Price, and Wells Fargo.

Philanthropy is a core competency at Key managed with the same rigor as its businesses and culturally engrained along with a strong sense of diversity and inclusion under the leadership of Margot J. Copeland, executive vice president, chair of the Key Foundation.

Key Foundation grants, corporate donations, and donations made by KeyBank in districts from Maine to Alaska are aimed at driving economic self-sufficiency through strategic emphasis on financial education and workforce development.

"Although Key's ratio of cash philanthropy to revenues in 2002 may appear impressive," says Copeland, "we're entirely focused -- not on the amount of dollars given -- but how effectively those dollars are put to use. Measurable benefits to residents touched by Key-funded programs have got to be there.

"We're thankful that philanthropic endeavors reflect well on Key but, in the truest sense, enriching the lives of people and the quality of life in the communities we serve is at the heart of who we are."
