INDIANAPOLIS, June 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, the charitable arm of Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY), today announced it will be providing $100,000 in financial assistance to aid Indiana tornado and flood victims. More than 44 Indiana counties have been declared disaster areas by Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels as a result of deadly tornadoes and severe storms. This weekend, an estimated 10,000 Hoosiers were evacuated from flooded homes as rivers in the south-central part of the state rise to near-record levels.

"The scope and the magnitude of disaster caused by the storms over the past two weeks is nothing less than dramatic," said John Lechleiter, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer, Eli Lilly and Company. "We hope that our funds will help our fellow Hoosiers in this time of need. Moreover, we commend all of the agencies -- from state government to local disaster relief -- for their collective efforts to help those affected and bring things back to normal."

The Lilly Foundation will provide a cash donation to the Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis, which will coordinate providing food, shelter, medical supplies and other essential items to those impacted in the state. As of Sunday evening, the American Red Cross had established emergency shelters in eight of the hardest hit counties. The agency also has activated a hotline to connect flood victims with a response center where volunteers can provide details about shelter locations and other vital information. The number is: 1-866-GET-INFO (438-4636).
