Updated Nike Statement on the Impact of Today's Tragedy

Updated Nike Statement on the Impact of Today's Tragedy

Published 09-14-01

Submitted by Nike Inc.

We are tremendously shocked and saddened by the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims. We as a global company strongly condemn any act of terrorism anywhere, by any means.

After assessing our New York-based operations, we have confirmed that our Cole Haan store, located in the World Trade Center, has been destroyed. We are relieved to report that all store employees are safe and have been accounted for.

All other Nike and Cole Haan stores are open. Nike's sales offices in Manhattan's Chelsea District, which were closed on Tuesday, opened for business on Wednesday. We believe that the approximately 250-260 Nike and Cole Haan employees based in New York are safe and accounted for. We also have confirmed that the approximately 50 Nike employees who were in New York on business are safe.

Additionally, no Nike employees were on board any of the planes involved in Tuesday's crashes in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon.

Nike Community Response
Both local and national Red Cross agencies have identified immediate financial support as their most critical need. For that reason, the Nike Foundation has been collecting contributions from individual Nike employees and factory partners across the country and throughout the world. Through matching funds, Nike will make a $1 million contribution to the American Red Cross and a variety of other local relief organizations.

Nike also is working with relief agencies in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania to provide donations of Nike products for victims who are affected by these tragic circumstances, as well as for those involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. The first such shipment currently underway is for 11,400 pairs of socks, which were identified by New York firefighters as a priority. Niketown New York delivered 1,400 pairs on Thursday, and Nike is shipping the remainder from a sock mill in Tennessee to arrive as quickly as possible. Nike and Niketown New York will continue to liaise with relief and government agencies and provide as much requested product as possible, including t-shirts and work boots for fire and rescue personnel.

Finally, Nike US employees will participate in a Red Cross blood drive on Sept. 24-25 at its Beaverton-based world headquarters.
