WESTLAKE, Ohio - Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq: NDSN), where the company's founder instilled a sincere commitment to "making a difference" half a century ago, remains among the nation's leading corporate citizens, according to Business Ethics magazine. The publication's annual list of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens, released today, includes Nordson for the fourth straight year. The company ranking moved up to No. 65 from No. 77 in 2003.

Using social ratings compiled by KLD Research & Analytics of Boston - plus total return to shareholders - the 100 Best list ranks companies according to service to seven stakeholder groups: stockholders, employees, customers, communities, the environment, non-U.S. stakeholders, and women and minorities. The top five companies in the ranking for 2004, drawn from among the 1,000 largest publicly traded companies, are Fannie Mae, Procter & Gamble, Intel, St. Paul Companies and Green Mountain Coffee.

Through volunteer efforts, personal donations and corporate contributions -- the company commits 5 percent of its pretax domestic earnings for charitable purposes -- Nordson and its people focus their energy on resources on significant civic projects close to home, with priorities driven by community needs. Beneficiaries of this largess include education, human welfare, civic affairs, and arts and culture endeavors surrounding major Nordson facilities in Lorain and Cuyahoga counties in Ohio; Greater Atlanta, Dawsonville and Swainsboro in Georgia; San Diego, California; and East Providence, Rhode Island.

"To this day, we are inspired by the example set by our founder, Walter G. Nord, who was deeply committed to 'philanthropy that makes a difference,'" said Edward P. Campbell, Nordson chairman and chief executive officer. "He and his sons Evan and Eric, who succeeded him in the leadership of the company, encouraged the people of Nordson to serve on nonprofit boards and volunteer in other ways to contribute to the community and help those who are less fortunate."

"Quite simply, good corporate citizenship is good business and good for society," Campbell added.

The 100 Best Corporate Citizens story appears in the spring issue of Business Ethics. For more information, plus the full list and story, see http://www.business-ethics.com.
