Fort Lauderdale, FL – The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), in partnership with Office Depot, will present the 2nd annual Walk as One Walk-a-thon on Saturday, October 18 at 9:00 am. Held at the Office Depot Center in Sunrise, Florida, this 3-mile walk raises money for NCCJ’s youth and community leadership programs, which are designed to dismantle prejudice and provide healthy approaches to leading an increasingly diverse society.

“Office Depot is proud to be the presenting sponsor for Walk as One,” said Bruce Nelson, Chairman and CEO of Office Depot and the General Chair for the Walk as One walk-a-thon. “At Office Depot, we embrace the diversity of our associates and the communities in which they live, work and do business. Being involved in Walk as One is a great way for us to celebrate this diversity while also extending our support to an organization committed to battling prejudice and promoting respect and understanding.”

Additional sponsors of the Walk include Comcast, Muzak, Spherion, JM Family Enterprises, Humana and AutoNation. Through corporate sponsorships and walker pledges, Walk as One raises money for a variety of NCCJ’s youth and community leadership programs, including anti-bias retreats such as Metrotown.

A three-day, two-night youth retreat, Metrotown brings students from all walks of life together and gives them the opportunity to interact with each other in a controlled setting with a carefully selected, skilled and equally diverse adult and student volunteer staff. Through a series of skits, learning exercises and daily discussion groups, students have the opportunity to share their cultural and ethnic differences with each other while also learning about the impact that racism, sexism, ableism, and ageism have on society. The goal of the retreat is to empower youth leaders to create institutional change to transform their schools and communities.

“Programs such as Metrotown give a sorely-needed voice to the usually hushed youth,” commented Dino Sarma, a 21-year old, pre-med student at Nova Southeastern University and Metrotown advisor. Sarma, who has been working with NCCJ since 1998 when he attended Metrotown as a participant, went on to say, “In a society where it's chic to be exclusive and hate is rampant, the refuge that Metrotown provides is vital. It’s a safe place where youth can be true to themselves and others.”

Over 1,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s walk and NCCJ has set a goal to raise $100,000. Walkers from all sectors of society including corporations, civic organizations, schools, and places of worship are welcome to participate in the Walk and enjoy a morning of music, food, and fun. Local radio station, HOT 105 will broadcast live from the event and provide free promotional giveaways. There is no registration fee and all walkers who raise $75 in pledges receive a Walk as One t-shirt.
