PHOENIX - Phelps Dodge Foundation has awarded 118 grants totaling $56,000 to teachers and K-12 schools located in or near communities in which Phelps Dodge or one of its subsidiaries has a presence. Funding came from the foundation's "Mini-Grants for Education" program.

More than 200 grant applications were considered from 23 communities across the U.S. Projects receiving funding included an earth, land and resources program in Morenci, Ariz.; an environmental education program to teach students about the effects of non-native plant life on river ecology in Clarkdale, Ariz.; a math performance improvement program in Duncan, Ariz.; a student/teacher recycling program in Silver City, N.M.; a reading remediation project in Leadville, Colo.; an experimental research project in Fort Madison, Iowa; an early reading improvement program in New Haven, Ind.; and a rocks and minerals discovery field trip program in Norwich, Conn.

The Mini-Grants for Education program was launched in 2005 with the goal of supplementing classroom curriculum and educational opportunities for students at U.S. schools and rewarding the creativity and initiative of teachers and school administrators.

"The new Mini-Grants program allows us to strengthen the foundation's commitment to education by supporting teachers in their efforts to improve the quality of education for their students," said Tracy Bame, vice president-Phelps Dodge Foundation and director-community affairs.

Applicants may apply for grants of $100 to $500. A school is eligible to receive up to four mini-grants during each application period. Deadlines to apply for the program are Nov. 15 and March 15 of each school year.

Teachers, school administrators, PTA officials and parent volunteers affiliated with schools located in or near communities in which Phelps Dodge or one of its subsidiaries has a presence are eligible to apply for funds on behalf of a school or classroom, with the stipulation that the applicants are directly involved with the implementation of the project.

The scope of programs and projects eligible for funding includes:

  • Mining, mineral and natural resources education programs and projects.
  • Science, math and technology programs and projects.
  • Student performance improvement programs focused on improving early reading, math or science skills.
  • High school vocational training programs and projects to introduce students to workplace skills and competencies.
  • High school college preparatory programs that encourage the pursuit of higher education in the field of science and/or math (particularly engineering and geology).
  • Environmental and safety education programs and projects.

Funds awarded though the Mini-Grants program may be used for field trip expenses; classroom materials, supplies and equipment; educational competitions at the state, regional or national levels; and student rewards for performance improvement.
