WASHINGTON - September 6, 2007 - The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) today named Safeway Inc., headquartered in Pleasanton, CA, as a finalist for a Corporate Citizenship Award in the category of U.S. Community Service.

"Safeway has shown exemplary dedication to the community and the Chamber wants to acknowledge its efforts," said U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue. "The business sector can be a valuable partner in solving important local challenges, and Safeway's work in the community is a prime example."

Safeway is being recognized for the Safeway Prostate Cancer Awareness Program, which has grown into a major community outreach initiative for the company's employees and foundation, raising nearly $28 million for prostate cancer programs and making Safeway the single largest corporate donor for prostate cancer research and treatment.

The U.S. Community Service Award, now in its 8th year, acknowledges businesses and chambers of commerce for corporate citizenship programs that contribute to social and civic progress in communities in the United States. Entergy Corporation, Freddie Mac, Time Warner's Cartoon Network and the Victoria Chamber of Commerce are also finalists in this category.

The winner is selected by a panel of corporate citizenship leaders, including past winners and BCLC's board of directors. The winner will be announced on November 7 at a celebration dinner at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. Six hundred business, civic, and government leaders are expected to attend the event.

BCLC's mission is to advance the positive role of business in society. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.
