PLEASANTON, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2005--Safeway Inc. (NYSE:SWY) announced today that it has raised $5.6 million during the company's fall breast cancer fundraising and awareness campaign. The annual campaign benefits a variety of breast cancer treatment and support programs in the communities in which Safeway operates stores.

To date, Safeway has raised over $16.6 million for an array of breast cancer research centers, hospice organizations, support agencies and education programs. Organizations that will receive grants from the 2005 funds include:

-- Fred Hutchinson Breast Cancer Research Center at the
University of Washington -- Seattle, WA

-- Bridge Breast Network -- Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

In 2005 Safeway and the Safeway Foundation also continued to be major supporters of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, a global leader in breast cancer research and community-based support and education. In addition to significant grants made to Komen chapters throughout the United States, the company sponsors Komen benefit races, called "The Race for the Cure," in 10 cities throughout the country.

This year Safeway partnered with singer and breast cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge and sold her new CD, "Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled," in its U.S. Safeway stores. The CD contains four new songs, including "I Run for Life," Etheridge's anthem for women whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. Proceeds from in-store sales of the CD will benefit the breast cancer charities supported by Safeway and the Safeway Foundation.
