To coincide with October as "National Breast Cancer Awareness Month", Safeway stores across the U.S. and in Canada will begin a company-wide fundraising and educational campaign to raise critical funds for research, education, screening and treatment of breast cancer. Participating stores include the following banners: Safeway, Vons (southern California), Pak 'n Save, Dominick’s (Chicago), Randall’s & Tom Thumb (Texas), Carr’s (Alaska) and Genuardi’s (Delaware Valley and Pennsylvania).

"Safeway has had a long standing commitment to finding a cure for breast cancer – a life threatening disease striking nearly 200,000 women each year and the second leading cause of death, taking the lives of over 40,000 women each year," said Mrs. Larree Renda, Executive Vice President–Retail Operations, Safeway Inc. "Over 18,000 of our checkstands will display the symbolic "pink ribbon" to encourage customers and employees to make a donation to this important cause. This devastating disease touches a significant number of our customers, employees and their families and we are proud to continue our efforts," added Renda.

The funds raised will remain in local communities and be used to support such prominent research and treatment organizations as the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the City of Hope, and YMe, an organization that provides supportive services to breast cancer survivors and their families. In addition, several local programs providing mammograms and other breast cancer treatment and education to women, particularly those in under-served communities will also receive funding.

In addition to the company’s fundraising campaign, over one million specially designed bookmarks will be available free to customers at in-store pharmacies and customer service counters. The bookmarks will feature breast self-exam, early detection and breast cancer prevention information.

The annual breast cancer campaign has become a hallmark of Safeway’s commitment to serving the community. The program follows an overwhelmingly successful summer campaign that raised more than $750,000 in support of prostate cancer research and education.
