Sears, Roebuck and Co. (NYSE: S) pledged $225,000 in cash and merchandise donations to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army for relief activities during the devastating wildfires raging through Los Alamos since last Thursday.

Today, Sears presented the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund with a $25,000 donation to aid in relief efforts. In addition, Sears will encourage customers to contribute to relief efforts by accepting donations to the American Red Cross at cash registers throughout the state of New Mexico from May 16 through June 12.

Also, approximately $200,000 (retail value) in new children's clothing is being donated to the Salvation Army in Santa Fe for distribution through Sears partnership with K.I.D.S. (Kids in Distressed Situations), which helped coordinate the donation.

"Sears is playing a leadership role in disaster relief activities nationally and in local communities like Los Alamos," said John Maguire, Sears store general manager in Santa Fe. "Responding to community needs is a priority for the company. It's our chance to demonstrate our support for families in our community."

In addition to supporting relief activities, Sears is helping the community in greater Albuquerque and Santa Fe rebuild by offering zero percent financing until January 2001, on purchases of $100 or more made between May 16 and June 30. This is a community service intended for those affected by the wildfire. Sears will accept Red Cross vouchers.

Sears is a national sponsor of the American Red Cross, donating $1 million over five years to disaster relief services throughout the nation. Last year, Sears and its associates, along with The Sears-Roebuck Foundation, contributed nearly $30 million in funding and merchandise to a variety of family-focused health, human service, environmental and civic organizations nationwide. In addition, Sears associates, along with their families and friends, provided more than 250,000 hours of volunteer services to community activities across the country.
