SBC Communications has provided 27 works by historical women artists to The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future, in its continuing efforts to support the nation's first museum dedicated solely to women and their contributions to society.

The works, which will be on display starting opening day September 29, feature recognized artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia Engelhard and Lois Mailou Jones, among others.

"The addition of this collection of impressive works provides the Women's Museum with an artistic cornerstone that complements the hi-tech, educational, historical and cultural elements that make the museum a complete picture of women's accomplishments," said Candace O'Keefe, executive director for the museum.

The works on loan to the museum include acrylic and oils on canvas or panel, works on paper and photographs.

Since the collection's inception in 1985, SBC has been committed to sharing and exposing its selection of American art not only to its employees and their families, but also the community at large. SBC utilizes its collection to enrich and educate the communities served by SBC Communications as well as those that might not otherwise be so fortunate to have arts and museum representation within local proximity.

The Women's Museum: An Institute For the Future officially opens its doors September 29 in Dallas. The museum was made possible in part by a $10 million grant from the SBC Foundation, the largest corporate contribution ever given to a women's organization or program in the history of the United States.

SBC's gift ensured that the museum would become a reality by encouraging other corporations to support this important initiative. The museum, a Smithsonian program, is the first major museum in the world dedicated solely to honoring and celebrating women's achievements.

Featured artists in the collection include women whose works have made major contributions to the art world.

Georgia O'Keeffe, a prolific painter from the first generation of American Modernists, and the foremost modern artist of the natural and spiritual terrain of the southwestern desert landscapes of New Mexico. Her paintings have ranged from pure abstraction to Precisionist Realism.
Helen Frankenthaler, for four decades, she has been creating images of beauty and power, influencing countless other artists. Her work, Tahiti, a 1989 mixograph print on handmade paper is a part of the collection.
Georgia Engelhard, niece of legendary photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who was a figure of extraordinary importance during the first half of the 20th century. While at her uncle's retreat at Lake George, she would often paint with her mentor Georgia O'Keeffe.
Lois Mailou Jones, a prolific artist who has been honored at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and was thus the first black artist to have a single-person show at that museum. She was also honored by the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.

The exhibit will be on display until March 31, 2001. The Women's Museum: An Institute for the Future, in association with the Smithsonian Institution, is the first comprehensive national women's history museum. It will feature stories of American woman through high-tech, interactive exhibits, innovative programming and technology.
