SBC Communications Inc. has been named a top performing company by the Council on Economic Priorities in its annual survey of socially responsible corporations. SBC ranked seventh overall out of more than 300 corporations surveyed, receiving a grade point average of 3.71 on a 4.0 scale. The company also ranked seventh among companies providing the most opportunities for minority advancement.

Each year the CEP, a public service research organization, analyzes the social and environmental records of Fortune 500 companies, assigning grades for performance in six categories: minority advancement, women's advancement, workplace issues, family benefits, charitable giving, environment, and disclosure. SBC received "A"s and "B"s in all categories:

Women's Advancement (A): Takes into account representation of women at all levels of the company; programs intended to successfully promote, recruit and retain women at all levels; and a company's efforts at financial reciprocity with the women in the community at large.

Minority Advancement (A): Takes into account representation of minorities at all levels of the company; programs intended to successfully promote, recruit and retain minorities at all levels of the company; and a company's efforts at financial reciprocity with minorities in the community at large.

Workplace Issues (A): Evaluates contributions to worker well-being via skills training and education, various health concerns, financial compensation, preparation for retirement, safety conditions and assistance after layoffs.

Family Benefits (A): Evaluates the efforts on the part of the company to create and aid employees in achieving a successful balance between work and family.

Environment (B): Evaluates the company's performance in four categories-impact to the environment, voluntary reporting to its stakeholders, compliance, and environmental management systems.

Charitable Giving (B): Measures the amount companies give to charitable organizations, in direct corporate gifts, gifts from foundations and in-kind donations.

"We are pleased to be recognized by the CEP for our efforts to maintain a high level of corporate responsibility on many fronts," said Edward E. Whitacre Jr., chairman and chief executive officer for SBC. "Good corporate citizenship is good business strategy and is one of the driving forces behind our company's success."

The CEP evaluates hundreds of corporations each year as part of its publication, Shopping for a Better World: A Quick and Easy Guide to All Socially Responsible Shopping, which was released at the end of April.

SBC's high marks reflect the company's continued growth in promoting diversity and advancement in the workplace, marketplace and community. The evaluation follows several recent honors and recognition SBC has received for its efforts.

In recent months, SBC has been named the nation's most admired telecommunications company by Fortune magazine; one of the nation's Top 25 Corporations for Executive Women by Working Woman magazine; the Sixth-Most Generous Corporation in America by Worth magazine; and the Corporation of the Year by the American Society on Aging.
