The Starbucks Foundation concludes another year of helping to create hope, discovery and opportunity in communities where it does business with national non-profits such as Jumpstart and America Scores as well as local community organizations across North America. Starbucks store partners (employees) and numerous community organizations have championed literacy efforts, resulting in the distribution of $1.7 million in literacy grants during fiscal year 2002.

“The Starbucks Foundation and Starbucks store partners are committed to supporting youth literacy for the long term,” said Lauren Moore, Starbucks director, giving and community affairs. “We thank our national and local partners who have helped us reach children at an early age when literacy skills are critical to a child’s success in school.”

The Starbucks Foundation continued its commitment to national literacy partners Jumpstart and America SCORES through ongoing financial and
volunteer support. In 2002, The Starbucks Foundation wrapped up the first year of its four-year $1 million commitment to Jumpstart, a national organization that works toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed. With support from The Starbucks Foundation, Jumpstart continues to expand its organization and promote early learning through its work with Head Start and other early childhood education centers. This year, Jumpstart opened 10 new sites across the United States where local college students work one-on-one with preschoolers to build language and literacy, social, and adaptive skills.

The Starbucks Foundation’s support of America SCORES started in 1997 with a grant to DC SCORES, an organization that was founded by a public school teacher who was also a part-time Starbucks barista in Washington D.C. Three years after the program's inception, the organization received its first Starbucks Foundation Grant. The America SCORES program gives youth opportunities to engage in physical, cognitive, psychological and social learning opportunities through soccer and creative writing. This relationship has expanded to include affiliates in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle. This year, The Starbucks Foundation recognized the need for assistance at a national level and committed to a three-year $225,000 partnership with America SCORES, helping the organization expand its programs across North America.

“In addition to our national partnerships we strive to improve literacy on a local level,” said Moore. Our enthusiastic Starbucks partners often champion these efforts and it is their passion to be involved that makes Starbucks participation a reality.”

Of the $1.7 million in grants in fiscal year 2002, more than $900,000 was distributed to 120 local literacy organizations in 20 states/provinces in the U.S. and Canada. These grants provide literacy organizations support in the development of innovative learning opportunities for children, youth and families. This includes funding for books, educational materials, and future recruitment and training. Since its inception in 1997, The Starbucks Foundation has awarded $5.9 million to more than 500 literacy organizations.

The Starbucks Foundation is a separate entity from Starbucks Coffee Company.

Funding for the Foundation has come mostly from Starbucks Coffee Company, and also from individual donations and Howard Schultz’s royalties from his book, Pour Your Heart Into It; How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time.
