Tellabs again has been chosen by FORTUNE magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For in America," a distinction based largely on employees' positive feelings about the company and an evaluation of the company's culture, compensation and benefits.

"Tellabs prides itself on its innovative culture that encourages employees to think and act like owners of the company," said Marc Ugol, vice president of Tellabs' Human Resources. "This type of environment has helped us attract some of the industry's brightest people who help us meet our customers' needs."

Tellabs was founded on the belief that all employees should benefit from the success they help the company achieve. As such, all Tellabs employees receive stock options when they join the company and options are given semiannually to key contributors and periodically to all employees. Stock options provide all employees the opportunity to reap the benefits of the company's financial successes. In October, Tellabs reported its best quarter in its history, with a 46.2 percent revenue jump, which marked the 37th consecutive quarter in which Tellabs' sales surpassed prior-year levels.

Creating a dynamic work environment has also helped Tellabs recruit new employees. Currently, more than one out of three new employees are referred by existing employees.

"That's the best endorsement that we can get," Ugol said. "Our people feel strongly enough about the company and the opportunities they have at Tellabs that they actively recommend it to their family and friends."

The company also stresses balance between work life and personal life. Tellabs offers family support services, lunch and learn seminars, internal training programs and working parent support.

To further employees' professional growth, Tellabs offers career development, mentoring and tuition reimbursement programs. For example, Tellabs pays up to $7,000 annually for tuition and books to employees who are going to college to earn a degree in a field related to their work.

This year Tellabs also was named to FORTUNE magazine's "100 Fastest-Growing Companies" and "America's Most Admired Companies," Industry Week magazine's "World's 100 Best-Managed Companies," Business Week magazine's "The INFO TECH 100 — The World's Best Performers" and "The 50 Best Performing Companies of the S&P 500."

Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services optical networking, next-generation switching and broadband access solutions. The company also provides professional services that support its solutions. Tellabs' products and services are used worldwide by the providers of communications services. Its stock is listed on the NASDAQ stock market (TLAB).
