The recently announced Sustainable Cities program aims to advance green building practices in urban centers and to raise public awareness about the need for healthier environments and protection of natural resources. UTC has awarded $350,000 in grants to nonprofits nationwide that will research and create programs furthering those causes. David will be presented with the award at a dinner in New York City.
"We have spent more than a century making buildings better," David said. Cities would not be what they are without Otis elevators and Carrier air conditioning. Today's innovations are reducing energy consumption and improving indoor air quality dramatically. Our Sustainable Cities investment augments our internal research commitments which exceed a quarter of a billion dollars annually. We're delighted to make it."
"UTC's innovative corporate philanthropy program builds on the company's environmental leadership as exemplified by the major reductions in its energy and water usage and in its greenhouse gas emissions, as well as being a founding member of both the Pew Center on Global Climate Change and the U.S. Green Building Council," said Mathew Petersen, Global Green USA president and CEO.
The dinner also will pay tribute to Gorbachev, who founded Global Green USA's parent organization, Green Cross International, in 1993 to build on the previous year's Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Green Cross is dedicated to ensuring a just, sustainable and secure future by working to establish a sense of global interdependence and a shared responsibility for protecting the environment. The organization has national chapters in 28 countries including Argentina, Belarus, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom and United States.
