Washington Mutual Named One of the Best Companies for Executive Women

With three women on its executive committee, Washington Mutual, Inc. (NYSE: WM) has been recognized as one the nation's top companies for women.
In the December/January issue of Working Woman magazine released today, Washington Mutual ranked 4th in the magazine's third annual survey of the Top 25 Companies for Executive Women. The list ranks publicly held Fortune 1000 companies with at least two women on the board of directors and a significant percentage of women in senior management. Washington Mutual's board of directors includes Anne V. Farrell, president and CEO of the Seattle Foundation; Mary E. Pugh, president and CEO, Pugh Capital Management; and Elizabeth A. Sanders, principal, Sanders Partnership. The company's nine-member executive committee includes Fay L. Chapman, senior executive vice president and general counsel; Deanna W. Oppenheimer, president, Banking and Financial Services Group; and S. Liane Wilson, vice chair, Corporate Technology.

"We're honored to have earned a top spot on a list that features some of the most successful companies in the U.S.," said Daryl David, executive vice president of human resources. "With the valuable contributions of the many talented women on our management team, we're well on our way toward building a world-class company for our customers, our employees and our shareholders."

In related news, the 2000 Catalyst Census recently issued its annual scorecard on corporate officers and top earners of the Fortune 500. With a total of 37.5 percent, Washington Mutual ranked seventh in the U.S. in the percentage of women corporate officers. In the study, Catalyst noted that Washington Mutual was one of only 10 companies in the nation with two women among their top earners.
