Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM) learned today the company has been named one of the "Best Companies for Minorities" by Fortune Magazine.
Out of the top 50 companies listed in Fortune, Washington Mutual placed 22nd based on criteria such as minority recruitment and retention, representation among the company's board of directors and senior management, minority-based corporate giving, purchasing with minority-owned businesses, overall minority representation among employees and the company's financial performance. Of its nearly 30,000 employees nationwide, Washington Mutual employs more than 11,000 employees of color, which represents 37 percent of its total workforce.
With a history dating back to 1889, Washington Mutual is a financial services company that provides a diversified line of products and services to consumers and small- to mid-sized businesses. At March 31, 2000, Washington Mutual and its subsidiaries had assets of $188.61 billion.
