Its Oklahoma operations have earned multinational forest products company Weyerhaeuser an "Outstanding Sponsor Achievement" award from the National Association of RC&D Councils.

The association is the umbrella organization of some 315 Resource Conservation and Development councils across the United States. RC&D councils involve public agencies, local businesses and individuals in improving the economic and environmental strengths of rural areas and small towns.

The Weyerhaeuser award, presented at the association’s annual meeting in Ogden, Utah, cited the company for its "strong, ongoing contribution to the quality of life in its communities -- a commitment to people’s lives that parallels the company’s commitment to quality forest products."

Since it began Oklahoma operations in 1969, the award nomination notes, Weyerhaeuser has "helped sustain public school programs, hospitals, libraries, volunteer fire departments, paramedic squads, museums, art centers and many other community projects," and also devoted land and resources to "wilderness areas … lakes, streams and wildlife." The company has established scholarship programs at Oklahoma universities and was instrumental in establishing an Environmental Education Center in Fort Towson, Okla. in 1997.

Weyerhaeuser was nominated for the award by Ouachita Mountains RC&D, Inc., which covers eight Oklahoma counties from its headquarters in McAlester, Okla. The company was selected from a field of seven national finalists for the competitive award.

"Weyerhaeuser’s support of RC&D programs are surpassed only by its commitment to the rural communities it serves," said Gary Garman, RC&D Coordinator of the nominating organization. "It has been a pleasure and honor to have such a good working relationship with Weyerhaeuser, especially its public affairs office in Wright City."

Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY), one of the world’s largest integrated forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900. In 1999, sales were $12.3 billion. It has offices or operations in 13 countries, with customers worldwide. Weyerhaeuser is principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber; the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products; and real estate construction, development and related activities.

In Southeast Oklahoma (McCurtain County) Weyerhaeuser manages more than 500,000 acres of commercial forestland, and manufactures lumber, plywood and the heavy brown paper used to make corrugated cartons. In Oklahoma City the company operates a paper recycling center and building products distribution center.
