Weyerhaeuser’s corrugated packaging facility in Tampa has been designated a Voluntary Protection Program STAR site by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration. Facility employees will be presented with a commemorative flag at a ceremony on Friday, April 28 at the plant. The Tampa plant is the first of Weyerhaeuser’s 61 corrugated packaging plants to receive this designation.

"We have achieved world-class results by having a strong commitment to safety at all levels of the organization," said Norm Schoenberger, facility general manager. "Employees know safety is a personal responsibility, so they show care and concern for their fellow team members. You can feel the strong personal and organizational pride when you talk to our people about safety, and we reinforce it by linking our safety efforts at the plant with Weyerhaeuser’s strategic goals. Safety is our #1 priority."

The Voluntary Protection Program is designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management and acknowledges facilities that go beyond simple compliance with OSHA regulations and standards. OSHA uses strict criteria and on-site analysis to evaluate locations. Criteria include a review of safety accident data, management and employee involvement, safety training and hazard identification.

Tampa plant employees have been recognized for taking hands-on responsibility for implementing and managing all aspects of the plant’s safety program.
