Xerox Commits to Report Emissions with California Climate Action Registry

STAMFORD, Conn. & LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 13, 2006--Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has joined the California Climate Action Registry (Registry), a distinguished group of organizations demonstrating leadership by voluntarily taking action on climate change. As a member, Xerox will work with the Registry to annually track, report and certify its greenhouse gas emissions, the main drivers of global warming.

A global technology leader operating in over 160 countries, Xerox has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions from worldwide operations by 10 percent from 2002 to 2012. Thanks to comprehensive energy management, new technologies and other strategies, the company is on track to meet that commitment. To date, Xerox data shows it has reduced emissions by more than 7 percent. Among its projects:

-- Redesigning manufacturing processes to reduce energy demand; for example, a new "embrittling agent" process cuts the energy needed to manufacture conventional printer and copier toner by up to 22 percent.

-- Developing more energy-efficient technologies, such as EA (emulsion aggregation) toner, which is produced using a breakthrough manufacturing process that grows toner particles to the right size. This advanced toner requires about 25 percent less energy to make, compared to conventional toner.

-- Creating increasingly reliable, longer-lasting Xerox printers and parts, along with offering more support through remote diagnostic services. This leads to fewer service calls, fewer miles driven by Xerox technicians, and fewer gallons of gas used. Longer-lasting parts also mean that less manufacturing energy is invested over the life of a Xerox product.

The Registry, created by the California legislature in 2000, helps companies and organizations throughout the United States to track, publicly report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The results are certified by independent third-parties to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and standardization across participants and sectors. The Registry has been widely recognized as a gold standard for public reporting of greenhouse gases.

"Saving energy and associated greenhouse gas emissions is environmentally responsible and financially smart," said Patricia Calkins, Xerox's global vice president of Environment, Health and Safety. "Joining the Registry will help us accurately measure our progress and aligns with the core values Xerox has followed since its inception to protect the environment and to push ourselves to ever-higher standards of performance."

"Xerox has built a strong reputation as a leader in sustainable business, and participating in the Registry helps support that reputation. Xerox can now validate its voluntary GHG reduction commitment by reporting certified, regulatory-quality data as part of the Registry program," said Diane Wittenberg, President of the California Climate Action Registry.

Over the past 40 years, Xerox has demonstrated leadership in sustainability and citizenship by designing "waste-free" products built in "waste-free" plants, investing in innovation that delivers measurable benefits to the environment, supporting educational and community projects, and many other integrated initiatives. The company has consistently been ranked among the "Most Admired Companies" in its industry by Fortune magazine, including a No. 1 ranking for "social responsibility" in the computers industry in 2006.
