Yahoo! Celebrates 35 Years of Earth Day with Comprehensive Eco-Friendly Resource Site

Submitted by Yahoo!

In honor of more than three decades of Earth Day, Yahoo! has assembled a comprehensive tribute to environmental conservation, providing a one-stop shop for tips and information on how to be a better friend to the planet. Featured today on Yahoo!'s homepage, the Earth Day microsite (http://earth.yahoo.com) is designed to inform consumers on simple ways they can change their lifestyles and habits to make a difference in the global environment.

"As the most trafficked site on the Internet, we value and appreciate our ability to draw on all of Yahoo!'s resources to inspire consumers to make a positive impact on the world around them," said Srinija Srinivasan, Yahoo!'s editor in chief. "As such, we have created an eco-friendly clearinghouse that highlights helpful information for our users, educating them about everything from everyday conservation techniques and hybrid cars to socially responsible investing and finding local organic farmers."

Yahoo!'s Earth Day site features tools and resources from the Yahoo! network, as well as information from nonprofits and government agencies. It includes:

  • 10 Simple Ways to Save the Earth in a Day: A compendium of resource-saving tips that consumers can apply to their daily lives. With dozens of helpful links, suggestions include using Energy Star appliances to conserve electricity, recycling cell phones and PCs, removing yourself from junk mail lists to reduce paper waste, transforming discarded items into enviro-art, and using water filtration systems instead of buying plastic bottles;

  • Earth Day Photo Contest Winners: A showcase of the ten finalists of the Yahoo! Photos Earth Day contest, which received thousands of submissions of images representing the spirit of Earth Day. Yahoo! will donate $10,000 to Earth Share on behalf of the winning photographer, Leonard Cogan of Portland, Ore.

  • Hybrid Car Spotlight: Information via Yahoo! Autos about new hybrid models as well as sedans, SUVs and minivans. It also includes a link to a gas mileage impact calculator;

  • Environmental Vehicle Resources: Links to sites about responsible car rental, alternative fuel station locators and an alternative fuel vehicle data center;

  • Guide to Socially Responsible Investing: A Yahoo! Finance special edition that brings together news articles about socially responsible investing (SRI), a list of the top ten SRI funds, helpful SRI links as well as money-saving tips on everything from conserving gasoline to investing in programmable thermostats;

  • Recycling Search: A tool for finding local recycle, reuse and disposal centers;

  • Living Green: Information on eco-friendly interior design, natural landscaping, living off the grid and renewable energy sources;

  • Earth Exploration: Resources for sustainable tourism, national and state parks, reality tours and volunteer vacations;

  • Earth News, Events & Facts: Links to help consumers stay on top of environmental issues, with resources ranging from environmental news and eco-friendly blogs to local pollution reports and Earth Day events across the US and Canada.

    The site also includes a range of helpful, conservation-inspiring facts, such as:

  • If every household replaced one light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb, it would be like eliminating the pollution from one million cars.

  • One hundred million trees are felled each year to produce junk mail.

  • If every plastic bottle were recycled, landfills would be 2 billion tons lighter.

  • Using appliances carrying the Energy Star symbol can save the average family $400 per year in energy bills.

  • Turning down your home thermostat two degrees saves 24 kilowatt hours a month.

  • Front-loading washing machines use fifty-percent less energy and one-third less water than top loading models.

  • Landscaping with the right mix of trees and shrubs can lower energy bills by blocking winter winds or summer sun.
