Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) de Mexico today announced a planned partnership with Mexican educational institutions to introduce a Toyota-sponsored technical education program in Mexico. This "industry/education partnership" will provide training opportunities in automotive technology for entry-level automotive service technicians.

Newly incorporated as Toyota’s sales and marketing company in Mexico, TMS de Mexico will forge partnerships with local vocational and technical schools to prepare young people for challenging, well-paid careers in automotive service.

Toyota expects to invest approximately 3 million US dollars in the multi-year program. This "school-to-career" training model will help provide the Mexican automotive retail industry and future Toyota dealers with a source of well-trained entry-level technicians.

"Toyota has a long standing commitment to education and always takes an active role in the communities in which we do business," said TMS President and CEO Yoshimi Inaba. "We are excited about the opportunity for Toyota to partner with schools in Mexico to enable students to advance quickly from a dynamic educational program into a career in the automotive industry."

Not only will dealers, students, and carmakers benefit from this partnership, but so will Toyota’s future customers in Mexico. The customer service experience will match Toyota’s high quality products through a commitment to educating highly trained technicians.

After successfully completing the program, graduates will be eligible to take advantage of several career choices.

An internship at a local Toyota dealership is one choice, but entry into Mexico’s Micro-Enterprise Program could be another option. Graduates interested in starting their own business will be eligible to apply for a micro-loan from this

Mexican enterprise program. Graduates also will be qualified for employment with independent service garages or for dealerships representing other makes.

Toyota’s support will consist of providing a curriculum, hands-on training, tools, equipment and instructor training. Thanks to a flexible, modular curriculum format, students will be able to take courses in specific areas of specialty, according to their personal goals, areas of interest and timetable.

Toyota has a longstanding commitment to the establishment of automotive training centers in the markets it serves. Current examples in North America include the Los Angeles Urban League - Automotive Training Center (LAUL-ATC), Toyota Technical Education Network (T-TEN) in the U.S. and Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES), a non-profit partnership between GM, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, BMW, Subaru, and Ford.

In preparation for its entry into the Mexico market, Toyota anticipates the first pilot training program to begin classes in the second half of 2002. Training of technicians takes approximately two years. Mexico City will be the site of the first pilot training center.
