According to the article in the November 2005 issue, The Washingtonian selected Choice among 55 other area organizations because of its "interesting work, good benefits, collegial staff, flexibility and employee development." The list is based on employee responses to a questionnaire sent to more than 225 companies. The Washingtonian conducts the survey every other year and also selected Choice Hotels as one of the Washington DC metropolitan areas "Great Places to Work" in its previous survey, which was published in November 2003.
"We are thrilled that The Washingtonian magazine selected Choice Hotels again as one of 55 Great Places to Work," said Charles A. Ledsinger, Choice Hotels' president and chief executive officer. "This is a testament to the efforts we have made to create a work environment that encourages innovation, supports a healthy work-life balance, and emphasizes career development and community involvement."
Referring to Choice Hotels' corporate headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, the article highlights the company's learning center that offers a host of classes from languages to computer science to negation skills; a sleek fitness center with a massage therapist and classes in yoga, Pilates and aerobics; and the company's employee discount at Choice brand hotels.
"At Choice Hotels, we strive to provide good benefits and a work environment that is interesting, fun and fulfilling to our employees. We know that employees are our most important resource and that recognizing and valuing them is good for business," added Tom Mirgon, senior vice president, human resources and administration.
Earlier this year, Choice received a Workplace Excellence Award and "Excellent Place to Work" designation from the Maryland Work-Life Alliance, a private public, nonprofit coalition focusing on work-life benefits and practices. The Maryland Transit Authority also recognized Choice with the Better Ways to Work Award for Outstanding Commuter Benefits Program in May 2005.
