DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2005--

Statewide Program to Promote Service and Leadership Activities for High School Athletes Throughout Colorado Communities

Qwest Communications International, Inc. (NYSE: Q), the Denver Nuggets and Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) today announced the launch of the first annual Qwest Leadership Challenge.
The Qwest Leadership Challenge invites male and female student athletes from each of Colorado's 660 high school basketball programs to volunteer in their community.

"The Denver Nuggets are excited to partner with Qwest and CHSAA to encourage student athletes to give back to their communities," said Denver Nuggets General Manager Kiki Vandeweghe. "Our fans and our community are so important to us. We're proud to be a part of the Qwest Leadership Challenge, which will improve the lives of some of our biggest fans and the people of the communities they touch."

Qwest and the Seattle Seahawks created the Qwest Leadership Challenge two years ago to promote volunteerism and community service among high school football players. The program generated almost 7,000 volunteer hours. In the end, nearly 200 Washington nonprofits each received $500 contributions to the groups student-athletes helped and $20,000 in college scholarships was awarded.

"We were so encouraged by the success of the Qwest Leadership Challenge in Washington that we decided to bring the program to communities in Colorado," said Ric Padilla, vice president of corporate social responsibility for Qwest. "Qwest is committed to making a positive difference in the communities where employees live and work, and this volunteer program challenges high school athletes to inspire their teammates, classmates and community members to promote activism and service."

A male and female from each participating high school will be chosen to compete in the Qwest Leadership Challenge. Upon completion of 40 volunteer hours for a nonprofit or educational organization, each participating school will receive a check from Qwest and the Denver Nuggets for $500 to be donated to its nonprofit organization of choice. In addition, two student-athletes will be chosen to receive $5,000 scholarships from Qwest and the Denver Nuggets as recognition for the outstanding achievements within their communities.

"This is our first time executing a program of this magnitude, and we are excited about the opportunity to work with Qwest and the Denver Nuggets," said Rhonda Blanford-Green, assistant commissioner for CHSAA and Qwest Leadership Challenge administrator. "It is so important for student-athletes to make a positive difference in their communities on and off the court. We are proud to help Qwest and the Denver Nuggets administrate the Qwest Leadership Challenge."

High school basketball students throughout Colorado can sign up for the program by contacting their coach or CHSAA at 303-344-5050.
