Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) announced today it is donating $250,000 to the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast. The donation will go to non-profit agencies primarily engaged in assisting flood recovery efforts. Torrential rains in Continental’s hometown of Houston last weekend left thousands homeless or facing massive cleanup.

The flood also affected many of Continental’s 20,000 Houston employees.

WE CARE, the airline’s internal assistance organization, has received nearly 1,000 calls from employees seeking help. To assist their peers, Continental employees around the world are contributing to WE CARE.

The storm - the remnant of Tropical Storm Allison - cost Continental approximately $10 million. More than 600 flights were canceled; other flights were diverted or ferried; passengers were rebooked on other airlines; and many passengers received refunds. Additionally, businesses have curtailed travel as they deal with the crippling aftermath of the flood.

"We want to extend a helping hand to the community. We are the largest private employer in our hometown, and what affects our neighbors affects us, too," said Continental Chairman and CEO Gordon Bethune. "Continental’s employees, facing physical and financial hardship because of the flood, have done a remarkable job getting the airline back on track. It’s appropriate that we do what we can to help get their lives, and their neighbors’, back in order."
