EarthShell Corporation (Nasdaq:ERTH), innovators of foodservice disposable packaging designed with the environment in mind, announced today that it met its commitment to supply McDonald’s with the recently approved final design of the EarthShell Big Mac container by May 29th. Initially, the new container will be used in the more than 100 Chicago locations, which have been using EarthShell Packaging containers for over a year. These McDonald’s restaurants will now be using the Big Mac containers, which feature double-tab closures and an improved coating. The new features enhance the properties of the package while maintaining the original environmental profile. Approval of this final design resulted from a thorough validation program to meet McDonald’s world-class performance requirements for distribution, warehousing, store operations and customer expectations.

“Supplying the McDonald’s restaurants, currently using the EarthShell package, with the final product design must be seen as an important milestone,” said Simon K. Hodson, Chief Executive Officer of EarthShell Corporation. “Capacity is being readied for expanded use of the hinged container to more McDonald’s locations in the Midwest and the introduction of the product to the West Coast in the near future.”

All future Big Mac sandwich container orders will be filled using the approved double-tab closure design. Since the introduction of the new-to-the-world packaging to select McDonald’s Chicago locations more than a year ago, nearly eight million Big Mac sandwiches have been served using the EarthShell Packaging hinged container.

The EarthShell container for the Big Mac sandwich was designed with the environment in mind. It was developed over many years using a Life Cycle Inventory and in consultation with leading environmental experts to reduce the environmental burdens of rigid sandwich packaging through the careful selection of raw materials, processes and suppliers. The containers are made from reclaimed potato starch, natural limestone and post-consumer recycled fiber (which does not require the cutting of trees), biodegradable polymer and wax coatings, and water. This new packaging substantially reduces risk to wildlife compared to polystyrene foam sandwich containers because it biodegrades when exposed to moisture in nature, physically disintegrates in water when crushed or broken and can be composted in a commercial facility, where available, or in your backyard.

EarthShell Corporation is engaged in the licensing and commercialization of proprietary composite material technology for the manufacture of disposable foodservice packaging, including cups, plates, bowls, hinged containers, and sandwich wraps. EarthShell Packaging is designed to be cost and performance competitive compared to other foodservice packaging materials, and also provide important environmental advantages.
