Heineken NV, the world's second-largest brewer, and its American subsidiary, Heineken USA, announced they are committing $500,000 to disaster relief efforts in the wake of the tragic terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, DC.

Two donations of $125,000 each have been made to the New York City Police Foundation Heroes Fund and the NY Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund, which provide assistance to families of police, fire and emergency rescue personnel who lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center. An additional $50,000 contribution also has been made to the Netherlands American Community Trust, a relief fund administered by the Netherlands American Chamber of Commerce based in New York City.

The balance of the $500,000 donation pool will be used in coming months to benefit a variety of other disaster relief organizations. In addition to the $500,000, Heineken USA will match all employee donations to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund through the end of 2002.

"There are strong historical ties between the Netherlands and the United States that date back to the earliest history of New York City," said Frans van der Minne, President and CEO of Heineken USA. "All of us in the Heineken family wish to extend our sincere condolences to all of the families that have suffered losses as a result of these horrible events."
