Astris Energi Sees Three-Fold Increase in its Fuel Cell-Driven Golf Car Range

Astris Energi Inc. (OTCBB:ASRNF), developers of alkaline fuel cell energy systems for small vehicles and homes, reported today that recent progress in hydrogen gas storage technology promises to nearly treble the distance its pioneering fuel cell-powered golf car can travel without refueling -- to eight days from three days at full daily usage.

The same extended range will apply to Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) operating at an average speed of 25 miles an hour.

The recent announcement by Quantum Worldwide, Inc., a leader in gaseous fuel storage, that its newly developed 10,000 pounds-per-square-inch (psi) hydrogen gas cylinder has exceeded the accepted burst test standard of 23,500 psi, means that Astris will soon be able to boost the fuel supply of its golf car from the present 3,000 psi canister to 10,000 psi, thus providing a three-fold increase in the range of Astris's golf car and other fuel cell-driven small vehicles it plans to develop.

"This advance in fuel capacity has far-reaching significance for our segment of the burgeoning fuel cell industry," said Gordon Emerson, Chief Financial Officer and Director of Astris, "because it will add extensive range to a fuel cell power system's other advantages: They are noiseless, odourless, emit no pollutants to the environment and are three to four times more efficient than gasoline-powered golf cars and other small vehicles."

Quantum's new high-pressure, ultra-lightweight, all-composite hydrogen cylinder is also undergoing various safety tests, including penetration by armor-piercing bullets and severe corrosion, according to Quantum officials.

Besides its fuel cell systems for small vehicles, Astris has a portable unit developed for the military and a four-kilowatt system that can provide electricity, heat and hot water for a home or small business. Both of these have been field tested in the Czech Republic by the company's affiliate there, Mr. Emerson said.
