International Data Group (IDG), the world's leading technology media company, today announced that once again FORTUNE magazine selected IDG as one of the "100 Best Places to Work for in America." Recognized for its dedication to employees, comprehensive resources and benefits it provides, IDG is the only publishing company on the list. Moving up four spots to #21, IDG is also the highest-ranking Massachusetts company.

"IDG's perseverance and commitment to its employees has helped us weather a challenging year and remain focused on creating a great place to work," said Patrick McGovern, founder and chairman of IDG. "After 38 years, I am proud of the entrepreneurial culture and emphasis on work/life balance that we have created and maintained at IDG."

This year, companies featured on FORTUNE's fifth annual list were selected based on their innovative programs for attracting and retaining world-class talent as well as keeping them satisfied in a downturn. IDG went above and beyond to motivate, satisfy and retain its more than 11,000 employees. One example of the innovative programs the company has implemented is an ongoing employee-focused seminar series called "Motivating and Rewarding on a Budget." By supporting creative and informative programs, IDG continues to boost morale and encourage employee loyalty.

An important tool IDG also uses to communicate with its employees is an annual employee survey. Conducted in the areas of image, leadership, job training, growth potential, work environment, management, benefits, compensation, and job satisfaction, this year's survey received more than a 90 percent response rate, the highest in the history of the survey.

Additionally, IDG Founder and Chairman Pat McGovern continues to make his presence felt throughout his company by frequently visiting all business units around the globe throughout the year. His presence is especially felt around the holidays as for the past 38 years, McGovern spends four weeks to personally greet each employee in the U.S., while handing the employee their personally-signed greeting card. McGovern also hosts a dinner with every employee to celebrate their 10-year anniversary with the company.

"Despite the economic cycles, retaining top talent is a number one priority for IDG," said Kelly Conlin, president and CEO of IDG. "Our employees have enabled IDG to become the world's leading technology media, research and events company in the world through their unwavering dedication and commitment to excellence."

FORTUNE's February 4th "100 Best Companies to Work For" issue examines a variety of elements that illustrate a company's commitment to its employees including salary, benefits, work/life balance programs, education and diversity. Companies considered for the annual list go through a rigorous evaluation process involving three parts. Two-thirds of the scoring is based on answers that a randomly selected group of employees give to 57 questions on the Great Place to Work Index Trust, a survey created by the Great Place to Work Institute. The remaining third of the score is derived through an evaluation of the materials the company submits. The most important aspect of this material is the Great Place to Work Culture Audit, a human resources questionnaire with open-ended questions about the firm's workplace practices, philosophy and work environment.
