All Glade products at SC Johnson's largest global manufacturing facility made with green energy

RACINE, Wisc. - Glade® celebrates a milestone birthday this year with 50 candles representing a half-century of leadership and innovation in the air care category. Its commitment to the environment....well, that's the icing on the cake!

Glade's® long-time slogan 'created by nature, captured by Glade,' describes more than the brand's fresh outdoor-inspired scents. "It means a corporate-wide connection to nature and a commitment to our shared environment," said Scott Johnson, Vice President of Worldwide Environmental Affairs at SC Johnson, the company that produces Glade®. "SC Johnson has a long history of environmental responsibility and we have made it a priority to produce great products in ways that reflect our commitment to doing what is right for the planet and future generations. We're especially pleased with the fact that all of the Glade® products produced at our largest global manufacturing facility are made using green energy."

A Green Plant Makes "Scents"
The majority of SC Johnson's Glade® products are produced at the company's Waxdale facility in Racine, Wisc. The factory houses two landfill and natural gas-powered turbines, making it the first consumer goods plant in the Midwest to produce nearly all of its own energy through a clean-burning process called cogeneration. As of 2005, the plant's two turbines began generating a total of 6.4 megawatts of electrical power, enough to meet the facility's daily base-load electrical demand.

This reliance on clean technology has significantly reduced SC Johnson's usage of heavily-coal dependent electricity along with emissions of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) and other pollutants in Southeast Wisconsin. The Waxdale plant alone has helped SC Johnson reduce GHG emissions by 52,000 tons per year - an amount equivalent to the GHGs generated by 5,200 automobiles each year.

A Change in the Air
Glade® was created by SC Johnson chemists using discoveries made during the Korean War to eliminate hospital odors. Glade® was the first consumer product that neutralized rather than masked unpleasant odors. Introduced in 1956, Glade Aerosol Spray and Glade Wick were available in two scents: Blossom and Evergreen. Consumers were delighted with how these fresh, "outdoorsy" scents seemed to bring the outdoors in. In those days, however, interest in nature and concern for the environment was a long way off for most consumers.

Family-owned SC Johnson, however, already had its sights both inside and outside the American family home, and began making efforts big and small to consider the environment. In the 1960's, Glade® introduced the first aqueous-based air freshening system. And in 1975, SC Johnson became the first company to remove chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from all aerosol products, three years ahead of the 1978 U.S. Mandate.

Big and Small, Near and Far
No aspect of SC Johnson's operations is too large or too small to be included in the company's environmental efforts. Activities which highlight the company's commitment to environmental responsibility can easily be found around the globe.

On a global scale, for example, the company has made big strides in harnessing technology and innovation to help the environment. Since 2000, the company has reduced worldwide emissions by 33 percent, reduced fossil fuel use by 33 percent in its top seven factories and reduced GHG emissions by 42 percent. In addition, the company's patented, Greenlist™ process actively integrates environmentally-preferred raw materials and packaging components in its products. In fact, the Greenlist™ process was used to reduce the levels of hydrocarbon propellant in Glade®. This past year, the Greenlist™ process has been honored with the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership and the Presidential Green Chemistry Award.

Birthday Wishes
In 50 years, Glade® has grown from two products to fifty fragrances in an ever-evolving range of product forms, a testament to the brand's focus on the changing needs and lifestyles of the American family. "We're a family company, so we care about the well-being of current and future generations", said Johnson. "As we look ahead to the next 50 years, as we continue to develop new and innovative products and scents, we'll continue to do so in such a way that helps to safeguard our environment for future generations."
