Starbucks Ascending President and Chief Executive Officer to be Featured at Annual International Corporate Citizenship Conference

CHESTNUT HILL - In his first major speaking engagement as Starbucks Coffee Company's (Nasdaq: SBUX) president and chief executive officer, Jim Donald will discuss how corporate responsibility is a core value for the world's largest coffee retailer. He will speak April 4 during the annual International Corporate Citizenship Conference to be held April 3-5 in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center.

The conference, titled Mapping the Future of Corporate Citizenship: Redefining the Markers for Business Success, is organized by The Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College and focuses on business strategy, best practices and trends related to the role that companies play in society.

In addition to Jim Donald, other speakers include Harvard Business School Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter, AMD Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Tom McCoy, Accenture CEO William Green, ImagineNations CEO Rick Little and futurist Andrew Zolli.

Donald joined Starbucks Coffee Company in October 2002 as president, North America. On October 12, 2004 he was promoted to chief executive officer designate and will become president and CEO effective March 31, 2005. As CEO, he will have responsibility for all Starbucks business operations, supply chain and general administrative functions. Starbucks Coffee Company is the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in the world, with more than 9,000 retail locations in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific Rim.

Donald began his career in the supermarket business in 1971 as a trainee with Publix Super Markets, Inc. and joined Albertson's in 1976 where he rose through its managerial ranks. In 1991 he joined Wal-Mart to build a major presence in the supermarket business and was a key executive in the development and expansion of the Wal-Mart Super Center. Donald also served as president and manager of Safeway's 130-store Eastern Division from 1994 to 1996 before joining Pathmark Stores, Inc. in 1996 as chairman, president and CEO.

The 2-½ day conference features 20 learning sessions that explore topics such as:

  • Putting corporate citizenship on the boardroom agenda
  • Embedding social issues into a corporate brand
  • Corporate philanthropy and volunteerism
  • Employees as key stakeholders
  • Sustainability
  • Developing Integrated Community and Government Relations Strategies
  • Defining the Markers for Corporate Citizenship Success

    The learning sessions will be led by executives representing companies such as Intel, IBM, Nike, Hewlett-Packard, Cone Communications, Abbott and Procter & Gamble.
