TORONTO, Ontario - According to the third annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR ) Monitor survey of over 25,000 citizens in 25 countries, conducted between October and December 2001, companies are facing increasing demands from the public to broaden their role in society. The 2002 CSR Monitor investigates a range of corporate issues including public expectations of companies, governance, communications, poverty, consumerism, investing, human resources, and company CSR ratings. The survey reveals a number of important insights that have implications for corporate strategic planning, risk management, communications, and internal education. Some topline findings from the 2002 CSR Monitor include:

Consumers are increasingly punishing companies that are not socially responsible:
The proportion of Americans that report having punished a company for being socially irresponsible is up significantly from last year.

Being socially responsible has positive impacts on employees:
Employee motivation and loyalty can be increased if a company commits to CSR: Eight in ten people who work for a large company say that the more socially responsible their company becomes, the more motivated and loyal they become as employees.

Corporate social performance is a factor in shareholders’ investment decisions:
A majority of shareholders say that they would sell their shares in a company if it behaved in a socially irresponsible manner, even if the share earnings were significant.

Citizens around the world have high expectations for companies to go beyond their traditional economic roles:
People believe that global corporations should do more to help solve social problems than provide charitable funding: Eight in ten people across the world say that companies need to go beyond philanthropic donations. There are equally high public expectations for companies to be involved in addressing social issues such as providing healthcare services.
