QUINCY, Mass., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- At a time when many lives are being affected by difficult economic times, The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company is moving its Food for Friends program into high gear, seeking to raise over $1 million for more than 300 local hunger relief organizations throughout the Northeast. Stop & Shop's charitable program kicked off on October 31st and will run through December 4th.

Stop & Shop announced the Food for Friends campaign against a backdrop of rising concern that a growing number of Americans will go hungry this holiday season. Families are increasingly faced with hard economic choices and food banks and charitable food pantries everywhere are reporting an alarming number of new families asking for assistance.

As part of Stop & Shop's Food for Friends campaign, all Stop & Shop stores will sell paper turkeys at checkout for $1-$3-$5 each, representing individual donations. The turkeys can be personalized by each customer and will be displayed throughout the store in a sign of charitable solidarity. One hundred percent of the funds raised in Stop & Shop stores will be donated to the local hunger relief organizations and the Company will match a portion of the money raised by each of its stores.

"Food for Friends is our commitment to giving back and being a reliable partner to the communities we serve," said President & CEO Carl Schlicker. "During these difficult economic times we are working harder than ever to fight hunger in our communities. According to our food bank partners, food insecurity issues are expanding across the country. The new face of hunger could be a neighbor or a friend. Stop & Shop customers and associates have always stepped forward to help those less fortunate."

This year, Food for Friends will be held in conjunction with the Stop & Shop Turkey Express program, which donated more than 20,000 turkeys to food banks throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Maine, and Rhode Island.

This will be the 19th year of the Food for Friends program and will run in all Stop & Shop stores through December 4, 2008. Information on the program can be found in each store or on our website at http://www.stopandshop.com.
