Assistant Secretary John F. Turner to Headline GEMI Conference, 'Sustainability Through Strategic Partnerships'

WASHINGTON, DC - The Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) announced today that John F. Turner, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) at the Department of State, will present the opening plenary address at its annual conference, which will take place in Orlando, Florida at Disney's Contemporary Resort, March 19-21, 2003.

"We are very pleased to announce that Assistant Secretary John F. Turner will be the opening plenary speaker for this year's conference," said Conference Chair Mary Beth Parker, Environmental Policy Manager, Mirant. She continued,"Assistant Secretary Turner is one of the most influential sustainable development leaders in the world. He has consistently recognized and emphasized the importance of utilizing strategic partnerships to implement global sustainable development goals." She concluded, "Secretary Turner is an outstanding person to begin a conference designed to comprehensively address sustainability through strategic partnerships."

"Those of us who operate in the international community recognize the important role that Assistant Secretary Turner is playing in leading the world to recognize and embrace the importance of developing and utilizing strategic partnerships of governments, businesses and NGOs to address the challenges and opportunities of global sustainable development," said Conference Co-Chair Terry Welch, Director of Environmental Technology Center, Dow Chemical Company. "One of the key roles that Assistant Secretary Turner played during the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) was to help move the international community to a recognition of the critical need for concrete action to fight poverty, lift the quality of people's lives and increase environmental stewardship through partnerships," Welch concluded.

In addition to Assistant Secretary Turner's presentation, highlighted plenary speakers include Adrian Hodges, Managing Director of Corporate and Partnership Development, International Leaders Forum; and Chad Pregracke, Founder and President, Living Lands and Waters. Panel discussions will address Environment: Value to the Investor; Roles, Risks and Value: NGO/ Business Partnerships; Local Sustainability Indicators and Trends; Suppliers Partnership for the Environment; Meeting the Challenge of Globalization; Innovative Federal Partnerships; Resources in the Supply Chain; Emerging Technologies; and the U.S. Clean Energy Initiative.

"GEMI's mission is to develop tools and information that can help 'business help business achieve environmental, health and safety excellence and corporate citizenship'," said GEMI's Chair, Jack Stein, Anheuser-Busch Inc. "This program is another example of how this organization, comprised of 40 leading companies from 15 business sectors, is continuing to move forward to address its important mission."
