ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - As local food banks, food rescue organizations, pantries and soup kitchens work frantically to meet a growing demand for services, Marcal Paper Mills, Inc. in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, has launched a new partnership program, joining Marcal consumers and the supermarket trade to help local community food banks and food rescue organizations feed the hungry. The program, "Marcal Helping The Hungry(TM)", will blanket states from Maine to Virginia from March 1 through December 31, 2003.

"We believe that through our Marcal brand, we can promote social justice," said Nick Marcalus, President and CEO of Marcal Paper Mills, Inc. Marcalus continued, "An example of this corporate commitment is by bringing our consumers and retail partners together to fight hunger. By simply purchasing quality Marcal products and redeeming UPC codes on the labels, or submitting special coupons which we will circulate in newspapers, Marcal will make contributions to participating food centers based on accruing funds for labels and coupons collected."

A visit to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey in Hillside prompted the development of the "Marcal Helping The Hungry" program. In New Jersey, the number of people served by hunger relief programs is up 11% to nearly 750,000, while nationwide 9% of the population is receiving assistance from food banks. Recognizing that the need was growing throughout its Northeast markets, Marcal created a program that could assist all of the communities which it serves.

Joining in to make "Marcal Helping The Hungry" a success are Marcal's retail partners, wholesalers, local grocers and supermarkets. Marcal will be making donations to registered, participating food banks in the name of those retailers supporting the program. This is in addition to the financial contributions Marcal will make to participating food banks when consumers redeem specified Marcal coupons delivered in Sunday newspapers distributed throughout the northeast and Mid-Atlantic States. The first coupon will be delivered on March 9th with other coupon events planned throughout 2003. Label collection programs are also being launched in schools, corporations and among volunteers supporting food support programs, and outreach is underway to engage churches and agencies that are beneficiaries of food bank services.
