NEW YORK, NY -- The Catalog for Giving is hosting its 8th Annual Urban Heroes Awards Benefit on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 6 PM at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers.

The Benefit honors 10 "Urban Heroes", inner city youth who, through their tenacity and hard work, overcame difficult life challenges, including poverty, violence, drugs, homelessness, crime, and abuse to become leaders in their communities. Presenting these awards will be several celebrities, including Sports Announcer and Commentator Bob Costas; ABC Television Anchor and Correspondent Elizabeth Vargas; NBC Television Anchor and Correspondent Jim Rosenfield; and Singer/Songwriter Marc Cohn (list in formation at time of this writing).

"As a broadcast journalist, I see the challenges facing inner city kids every day. That's why I'm proud to support The Catalog for Giving and the 10 organizations they fund. These organizations truly make a difference in the lives of thousands of kids," said Elizabeth Vargas. "Over the many years I have attended the Urban Heroes Awards Benefit, I have never ceased to be amazed by how resourceful the Urban Heroes are--the life stories they share of triumph over adversity are truly compelling and inspiring."

The Urban Heroes Awards Benefit also honors adult Urban Heroes from the corporate and government sectors whom are making a positive difference in kids' lives. This year's honorees include Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig, Def Jam/Def Soul Records President Kevin Liles, NYC Deputy Mayor Carol Robles-Roman, and NYC Commissioner of Youth and Community Development Jeanne B. Mullgrav.

"I am deeply honored to be recognized as a 2003 Urban Hero by The Catalog for Giving," said Commissioner Selig. "Like The Catalog for Giving, Major League Baseball is committed to improving the lives of inner city youth through programs that promote teamwork, education, and positive self-esteem and I would like to commend all of this year's Urban Heroes honorees for their perseverance and success in this effort."

The Urban Heroes Awards Benefit is The Catalog's largest fundraiser. Last year's event at The Regent Wall Street was attended by 543 people and raised over $580k. Overall, since its establishment in 1994, The Catalog for Giving has raised over $4 mil for youth service programs in NYC.

"As Board President, I am honored to have an opportunity to raise monies for our 10 funded organizations so that they can turn the lives around of even more kids who need help," says Catalog for Giving Board President Jeremy Singer. I'm thankful that our donors and celebrity friends play such a large role in changing the lives of thousands of kids throughout New York City."

Using minimal resources, these organizations have an exponential impact--not only on the youth they serve and the Urban Heroes (selected from each of these agencies) The Catalog honors, but also, ultimately, on their communities.
