LONDON - Social Capital is a start up company whose mission is to help people move out of poverty. Social Capital has developed a software tool that quantifies social impact created by socially responsible investments. This software is named SOCIOMIC and has been developed with the support of the Faculty of Mathematics of Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, and the London Business School. SOCIOMIC has already been licensed to a large industrial Spanish group, who has successfully measured the impact of its supply chain activities in less developed countries. SOCIOMIC also addresses the needs of measurement of the NGO sector.

SOCIOMIC measures socio-economic value using economic value measurement tools: it conducts a cost-benefit analysis, identifying the societal benefit that a program has delivered. SOCIOMIC can also measure the societal value of health and educational programs in less developed countries. SOCIOMIC approach focuses on the measurement of economic and socio-economic value. Economic value is monetized via a traditional cash flow valuation. Socio-economic value is monetized and a net present value of the societal benefit is obtained. SOCIOMIC can then map the social return on investment against any business performance metric, helping the manager to assess the mathematical relationship between business and social performance. It analyses how CSR impacts on the business performance of the organisation. SOCIOMIC also includes the description of a typical enterprise employee and ways in which the enterprise’s supportive employment has helped in meeting these challenges. These employee profiles, together with information about the risk characteristics of employees, provide a sense of the enterprise’s non-monetizable contributions.

Tracking the socio-economic changes that take place over time in an individual’s life can be very complex and fraught with possible inaccuracies. SOCIOMIC is a comprehensive data gathering and tracking system that enables social investors to track the services provided to individuals. The software assesses, over time, the impact of these services on individuals' lives. The implementation of SOCIOMIC has systematized and simplified calculations of social impact. Interviews are conducted on-line, thus reducing time and cost and making feasible a sophisticated and accurate analysis at a low cost.
