LONDON - The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) has announced that Standard Chartered, the world’s leading emerging markets bank, has been awarded the International Award for Corporate Citizenship for its outstanding work in community development across Africa.

Standard Chartered has been recognised for its commitment to African development at a time when the need for international aid and support for the region is attracting ever-increasing attention.

This award illustrates how business has become a key player in African reform demonstrating the major role it has to play in addressing Africa’s global threats like HIV/Aids and poverty alleviation.

“I am absolutely delighted with this award,” says Peter Sullivan, CEO for Africa, “it clearly demonstrates the strength of our commitment to the communities in which we operate. Business has an important role to play in the continent’s development and this shows our leadership in this area.”

Standard Chartered has been operating in Africa for more than a century and has a presence in 14 African countries. The Community Partnership for Africa, with an annual Africa wide budget of $1.5 million, was set up to support their sustainable community programs with a focus on youth, health and education for the economically disadvantaged. In addition to funding from the bank, the projects are supported by volunteer work from bank staff.

In addition to promoting effective sustainable community programs, it has also addressed social needs such as the provisions of basic necessities like electricity, shelter and water as well as healthcare facilities and equipment.

Various Standard Chartered HIV/Aids initiatives across Africa in the workplace and surrounding communities such as the ‘Staying Alive Campaign’, an education campaign on HIV/Aids, were instrumental in winning the Global Business Coalition on HIV/Aids 2003 Award for Business Excellence in the Workplace.

The International Award, which is one of Business and the Community Awards for Excellence, is sponsored by BUPA Community Connections in association with the IBLF, an organisation that promotes international leadership in responsible practices, to benefit business and society. The IBLF works strategically with business, civil society and the public sector in transition and emerging economies in order to achieve socially, economically and environmentally sustained development.
